What makes a person who they are? What surrounds them and influences them. What surrounds and influences me?
Surrounding me are grey skies, stuffy public buses, friends I've had for nine years, lots of complete strangers, art, and too many books to count.
Influencing me is music, books, and people I pay attention to.
Music like what? Like the Kooks, The Wombats, Los Campesinos!, Tokyo Police Club, the Dykeenies, MGMT, the Ting Tings, Sugarplum Fairy, Hank Green, Jason Mraz, Augustana, the Fray, The Morning Benders, Sheepy, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head, Klaxons, Cold War Kids, Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, the Last Shadow Puppets, The Shins, Landon Pigg, Kate Nash, Illinois, and did I already mention THE KOOKS?
Books like what? Books written by authors like John Green, Scott Westerfeld, Maureen Johnson, Kevin Brooks, Chris Wooding, Justine Larbalestier, David Levithan (& Rachel Cohn), Libba Bray, Holly Black, Garth Nix, Tamora Pierce, Darren Shan, E. Lockhart, Clive Barker, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, Herbie Brennan, Cornelia Funke, Ned Vizzini, Louise Rennison, Mark Peter Hughes, Stephenie Meyer, Michael Lawrence, Patrick Carman, Emily Rodda, Christine Morton-Shaw, Catherine Fisher and many, many more.
What sort of people? People like my three best friends, John and Hank Green, and all my writing buddies.
What's Going On In 2008
All Year, Every Year: Poems and stories that are possibly embarassing
Up Now: ...But I Hate the Name Mary, which is a story that my grandmother told me to write "some day." Quinn Holland thought his mother was a little nuts when he got accepted to a boarding school she picked out. He thought she was absolutely deranged when he found out is was a girls' school. Rated T for language. Updates will hopefully be frequent enough for all you reviewers to keep reading this... Feel free to PM me about how you want another chapter up since that will most likely get me in gear.
Up Now: Sophomore Year, which will turn into a masterful collection of poetry when this school year is over. I write something for it basically every day, but updates aren't that frequent due to Massive Amounts of homework from my horrible English teacher who tells us that we're evil. (Basically: this is made up of poems about my life that I hope someone will understand and take some greater meaning from.)
December/January: It Started With A Mix, my 2008 Nano novel and, in my opinion, the best Nano I've done so far. Nicholas Dunhorn doesn't care about very much other than music, but when he gets the assignment of a social experiment in Psychology class he decides that he will make some friends! While it seems easy enough, someone has other plans for Nick and they don't involve him making it through the next eighteen days...
News and Recent Accomplishments
- I attended summer writing camp and got up in front of many people on a very hot night and read a poem about two of my friends who were there with me (although it wasn't really about them so much as about music); my essay "about" wombats was published in our anthology, Autobifictionalographical.
- I am officially a Sophomore. Woo-freaking-hoo.
- I saw The Wombats at their Seattle show!! I shook their hands and was right up front and first in line!
- I saw The Kooks for the third time on October 21st!
- I went to see John Green on October 28th, and didn't meet him. But I still gave him an awesome gift!
- I set my new Nano record: EIGHT DAYS! Without edits, the total word count is 52,352. Be on the lookout for It Started With A Mix in the coming months as I am starting edits 11/9! (Find me at Nano as Falconrider.)
